About

The adventures of the s/v Carmanah–home port Bainbridge Island, WA–owned by John & Donna continue.  Purchased in 2004, we’ve spent 10 years cruising, racing and upgrading her ultimately for an extended cruise which started in May 16, 2015 when John retired from a career in Parks & Recreation.  The initial plan is to head north toward Alaska for the summer with no set itinerary.–just leisurely cruising familiar waters while tweaking the boat’s new systems.  Then, we plan to head down the coast to San Diego in the fall to join the Baja Ha Ha rally to Mexico for a whole new experience.  From there we have no firm plans.  Our white fluffy dog Lucy will be along as far as possible for comic relief. We will try to keep this blog up to date for our friends and family as we move forward on this adventure–at least with photos and position reports.  We are currently slowly heading north trying to get all our new systems working properly before our cruise south.  Windvane selfsteering, desalinator, new rigging and sails, and various electronics are all getting dialed-in as well as properly stowing the extra gear associated with living aboard the boat.  We have rented out our house so this is our primary home now for the foreseeable future.

Have really been enjoying your journal … it is clear that you two are well prepared to face all adversities, thank goodness! We have been up to Brooklin again seeing Eastern boats and waters … the new boat at the Brooklin Boatyard has just left town. We finally got our Seaway in the water in time to head to Castine to look for the French Frigate L’HERMIONE on Tuesday. For us it was an amazing day on the water. Over to Castine in medium fog, back Wednesday in very dense fog. Adds a layer of mystery and adventure to it all. Boats by the hundreds of every size and propulsion type. We spent the night. There were shuttles provided from a dingy platform … parade and music and so on at town center. Fireworks after dark in the low lying fog … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2XbVnsZdns&feature=youtu.be

Keep up your fun times and good work! ♡♡♡

Andrew, it was by far our favorite modification. No end of pluses and have not noticed any negatives. Although we have worried that sea otters could get aboard over the modified transom.
